history

L’Anse-Saint-Jean was created in 1838 when members of the Société des Vingt et Un landed there.

This small natural cove was resting at the foot of a monumental landscape and it was surrounded by a luxuriant forest, rich, fertile land, and lakes and rivers abounding with fish.

From the beginning, the town profits from these resources, and it thrives through forest exploitation and ship building.
Anse à Tabatière Today, nature itself is the catalyst of the local economy.

Actually, the tourist industry soared considerably over the recent years, thanks among other factors to the distinctive geographical location of L’Anse-Saint-Jean, quietly nesting on the edge of the impressing Saguenay Fjord.

geology
Two distinctive geological events seem to be responsible for the formation of the Saguenay Fjord. First, about 950 million years ago, the Canadian Shield was fragmented in different places and this fragmentation gave way to rifts of varying depths. Eventually, it seems that the ground collapsed between two of these rifts, thus creating a trench that was to become the bed of the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean. Centuries later, the natural drift of the great glaciers further sculpted the landscape, leaving behind them the amazing scenery you can see today.

The Saguenay Fjord has features that are unique in Canada, such as its vertiginous escarpment, a diversified flora, an impressing fauna, and a very unusual landscape. With its 120 km and its soft water debit rapidly combining with the salted waters of the St.Lawrence estuary, it’s an exceptional area that attracts thousands of travellers each year. The visitor that travels up the Fjord can, at a single glance, gaze at an amazing geological complex, and witness at the same time the staggering ballet of the great sea mammals.
kayaking on the Saguenay river The Saguenay and L’Anse-Saint-Jean region is a privileged area for nature and wide open spaces lovers.

It’s the ideal place for outdoor activities such as sea kayaking, bicycling and sailing in the summertime, and for skiing, snowmobiling and dogsledding in the winter season. Fishing and hiking are possible all year long.

With its breathtaking sceneries, its original gastronomy and its heartwarming accommodations, the Saguenay-L’Anse-Saint-Jean region is a unique and fascinating tourist destination that you simply must discover.
